Walter O’Malley comments about the first Dodger home series at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum against the San Francisco Giants, which drew 167,209 fans. “I was elated with the attendance,” said O’Malley. “But what really got me was the tremendous showing of adoption by the fans. It seemed that fully half the men were wearing Dodger caps, and Mrs. (Kay) O’Malley pointed out that an amazing number of women wore blue Dodger dresses. What’s more, they were noisy and they stayed. Now we’ve got to make ourselves worthy of that welcome. Let’s face it. The boys played bad ball. They’ve been on the go at luncheons and dinners. They’ve been in parades. Most of them still are house hunting. Bear with them a little bit.”1

Walter O’Malley writes a letter to Mrs. Fred Brisson, better known as Tony® award-winning actress Rosalind Russell, expressing his concern that she had been in the hospital. “(O’Malley’s wife) Kay asked that I tell you how sorry she is and, of course, for me too. All good wishes Roz, and when you are well enough to stand the strain of another Dodger cliffhanger let me know and we will have dinner and game in our box. Fred and (son) Lance are welcome too.”
