This Day in Walter O’Malley History:

  • In a note to Robert Moses, Chairman of New York’s Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, Walter O’Malley writes: “Dear Bob: Phil Wrigley send (sp.) me a copy of a report on major league baseball possibilities in Los Angeles. I thought you might like to thumb through it at your leisure. There is nothing startling in the report but it does present a point of view. Can we have a talk after the holidays on my problem.”

  • ABC Sports reporter Howard Cosell visits the Dodger offices in Brooklyn for an appointment with Walter O’Malley at 12:15.

  • Walter O’Malley attends a dinner for the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame, Los Angeles Chapter’s third annual Scholar-Athlete Awards program at The Stadium Club at Dodger Stadium. A sellout crowd is in attendance to honor 10 high school football players from the Southern California area, who receive awards from Los Angeles Rams star Elroy “Crazylegs” Hirsch and 1962 Heisman Trophy winner quarterback Terry Baker, for their excellence in both grades and gridiron ability.

  • A letter to “All Our Dodger Family” from Walter O’Malley informs employees that several promotions have occurred within the company. “I am pleased to inform you of the following appointments to be announced shortly: Executive Vice President...Peter O’Malley; Vice-President in Charge of Player Personnel and Scouting...Al Campanis; Vice-President in Charge of Minor League Operations...Bill Schweppe; and Vice-President in Charge of Radio & Television...James S. Bealle. The front-office restructuring is built on departmental lines, which is desirable in the complex baseball picture of today. I am certain we will have a strong team with these newly appointed executives and our regular staff.”
