This Day in Walter O’Malley History: December 23

The New York Times carries a one-paragraph announcement of the signing of 18-year-old southpaw pitcher Sandy Koufax by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a $30,000 bonus player. The former star at Brooklyn’s Lafayette High School and University of Cincinnati was the apple of all major league club scouts’ eyes. Koufax signed his contract at the Dodger offices at 215 Montague Street and is scheduled to report to Spring Training at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida on March 1, 1955.
