This Day in Walter O’Malley History:

  • As the winner for catching the largest fish in a contest at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, Dodger outfielder Carl Furillo receives a $50 check from Walter O’Malley. The Spring Training contest, open to all Dodgertown anglers, was held at the new heart-shaped Dodgertown lake.

  • In his personal appointment book, Walter O’Malley jots “7:00 writers — return from LA to meet NY writers”. O’Malley had spent time in Los Angeles visiting the Dodgers’ affiliate Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League and meeting with L.A. officials about the possible relocation of the Dodgers to the West Coast.

  • Walter O’Malley meets in his office with Dodger pitcher Don Drysdale.

  • Sportswriter Les Biederman of The Pittsburgh Press sends a letter to Walter O’Malley regarding his first experience visiting Dodger Stadium, including its press box. “You are to be commended for not only using your own money but giving Los Angeles such a beautiful monument to sports,” writes Biederman. “I couldn’t find a thing wrong even if I tried. Everything is perfect and as for our writing needs, the press box is the last word. I only hope Pittsburgh can have a stadium half as beautiful as yours — even though I realize it will cost twice as much here! Los Angeles is to be congratulated in having a man of your vision and influence — a true blue sportsman — as a resident and an important cog in the community.”
