This Day in Walter O’Malley History:

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Jim Murray writes a classic column about Walter O’Malley that appeared in The Sporting News. Murray penned, “To some, he’s a 260-pound leprechaun, as sentimental as old lace, as soft as sponge cake, as philanthropic as a Community Chest, as misunderstood as Einstein’s theory, as lovable as a puppy. He’s Father Christmas in a double-breasted suit...O’Malley came to the club as its attorney. He will leave it as its principal owner, chairman of the board and the single most striking front-office figure in the history of the game, one who not only changed the face of baseball but of professional athletics.” Jim Murray, “Best of Murray”, The Sporting News, June 17, 1972
