This Day in Walter O’Malley History:

  • After previously granting the Detroit Tigers permission to talk to Dodger special scout Charlie Dressen about their manager’s job, Walter O’Malley sends a letter of congratulations to the former Dodger manager. In his letter, O’Malley writes, “I am really glad to see you back in uniform. I am being just as serious as I can be in wishing you the greatest success in this new assignment.” In his fourth stint as a major league manager, Dressen moved the Tigers from ninth place when he took over the club and moved them up to fifth place. He then guided them to two fourth-place American League finishes.

  • According to columnist Bob Hunter writing his Dodger notes in The Sporting News, “Walter O’Malley was feted at a testimonial at the Beverly Hilton by the National Conference of Christians and Jews June 21.” Bob Hunter, The Sporting News, July 17, 1971
