This Day in Walter O’Malley History:

  • Walter O’Malley and Dodger Executive Vice President and General Manager Buzzie Bavasi have lunch at the Los Angeles Times with Publisher Otis Chandler and Special Events Director Glenn Davis, the former Heisman Trophy star halfback at Army in 1946. Davis was known as “Mr. Outside” to fullback Doc Blanchard’s “Mr. Inside” at Army, which won back-to-back National Championships in 1944 and 1945 and split one with Notre Dame, playing to a scoreless tie, in 1946.

  • The record setting infield of the Los Angeles Dodgers – Steve Garvey at first base; Davey Lopes at second base; Bill Russell at shortstop and Ron Cey at third base are in the starting lineup for the first time in the second game of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds. The infield then stayed together through the 1981 season, the longest time ever spent by four infielders on a baseball diamond.
