Photo of Dodger President meeting Matsutaro Shoriki at welcome reception for the Dodgers

1956

The Dodgers arrival to Japan for the start of their 1956 Goodwill Tour was delayed. They spent more time on Wake Island during a stopover due to an airplane mechanical issue. A crowd of a half million was expected to greet the Dodger traveling party on the streets from Haneda Airport to the Imperial Hotel. Due to the delay and rain, the crowds were cut down, but nonetheless enthusiasm ran high to catch a glimpse of the players. Yomiuri’s Matsutaro Shoriki hosted a welcome reception for the Dodgers at the Yomiuri Building and in this photo Dodger President Walter O’Malley, surrounded by Dodger players, meets Shoriki.
