Photographs of various visits by the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants to Dodgertown – Vero Beach, Florida for participation in pre-season workouts

1967

The Dodgers and Tokyo Yomiuri Giants established a close relationship since the Dodgers’ 1956 Goodwill Tour in Japan. In return, the O’Malley family reciprocated with invitations for the Giants to start their pre-season training camps at Dodgertown – Vero Beach, Florida. The first visit by the Giants was February-March, 1957 when Shigeru Mizuhara, the Hall of Fame Manager, a pitcher and a catcher worked out and received instruction from Dodger personnel. By 1961, the entire Giants team began their season in Dodgertown for workouts and visits occurred there again in 1967, 1971, 1975 and 1981. During that period of time, the Giants established themselves as the most successful of Japanese professional teams as they would win the Japan Series title in 1961 and 1963 and then capture an astonishing nine straight Japan Series championships from 1965 through 1973, always with appreciation and giving credit to Dodger instruction.
