This Day in Walter O’Malley History:
-
In a letter to actor Cary Grant, Walter O’Malley writes, “Dear Cary: Here is a wild one. I note that Prince Philip will visit Miami in March and on the outside chance that his advisors think it would be good public relations for him to see an American baseball game I would want to offer any of the games we play at Vero Beach, Florida, as the occasion. We could pick up the official party in any city in our plane and return them after the game. Proper security measures, of course, will be taken with the cooperation of the United States Secret Service Bureau. We have worked with them before. If this sounds impractical forget it. If it is something, however, that we could process in a dignified and formal way give me the guidelines. All the best.” Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, married Princess Elizabeth in 1947. Princess Elizabeth succeeded her late father King George VI to the throne on June 2, 1953.
